The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education was started in the University in the year 1993. The University Act authorizes the functioning of the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the University jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) of UGC. The Directorate has about 173 learning Centre’s across the country with a commitment to extend the reach of the higher education carrying forward the pronouncement “to reach the unreached”.
The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education offers U.G., P.G, P.G. Diploma, Diploma and Certificates Courses which have been recognized by DEB, New Delhi.
Department of Education, an integral part of the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education (DD & CE), Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, was created in August 2008. It is a full-fledged Teaching and Research Department. At present, the Department is offering the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). Programme with the approval of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi.
The Department comprises One Associate Professor and Six Assistant Professors. Keins College Education, Valliyoor, St.John’s College of Education, Veeravanallur, Ponjesly College of Education, Nagercoil, Kamaraj College of Education, Pazhavilai and Rev. John Thomas College of Education, Meignanapuram are the five approved Study Centre’s to conduct the B.Ed classes. The Department Library has a collection of 3000 books dealing with subjects related to education.
The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). Programme of the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education (DD & CE), Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, aims at developing knowledge attitude and skills required by practicing teachers for effective teaching-learning process at the secondary level. The programme provides opportunities of sharing experiences gained by practicing teachers. It enables in-service teachers to select and organize learning experiences according to the requirement of learners. In addition, it provides knowledge and develops in them an understanding of areas such as educational evaluation, school management.
