The Department of Mathematics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was established in the year 1992 with a mission to offer Post graduate degree and Research Programs in Mathematics. The faculty members of the department are intensive researchers and the department has a good number of externally funded research projects granted by funding agencies including UGC, DST and DRDO etc. The following is the chronological development of the Department since its inception.
All the faculty members are active researchers. The faculty members of the Department are actively involved in the following areas of the research.
This department has produced 98 Ph. D’s till 2023 in thrust areas viz Algebra, Harmonic analysis, Graph theory, Algebraic graph theory and Fixed point theory. At present there are 17 full time Research Scholars working for Ph. D. They are supported by Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, INSPIRE Fellowship and Major Research project Fellowship.
The faculty members and research scholars have published good number of research papers in reputed journals including SCI and SCI Expanded.
The National Board of Higher Mathematics has been sanctioning annual library grant to the Department from the year 1999. Now that the annual grant from NBHM is Rs. 5.8 lakhs per annum
The University Grants Commission has recognized and sanctioned UGC-SAP (DRS-I support to the Department for a period of five years (2007-2012). The total grant for the DRS-I period is Rs. 37.5 lakhs.
Having completed UGC-SAP (DRS-I), the Department has been sanctioned UGC-SAP(DRS-II) for a period of five years from 2013 to 2018 and an amount of Rs.57 lakhs was allotted.
The Department has also been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology for FIST support for a period five years during 2014 -2019 and an amount of Rs. 47 lakhs has been sanctioned.
Prof. T. Tamizh Chelvam, Formerly Senior Professor in the Department has been selected as CSIR Emeritus Scientist and joined the Department as CSIR Emeritus Scientist from October 2020.
The Department have received Library grant of Rs.4,00,000 from National Board of Higher Mathematics during 2022-2023.
The Department have received Library grant of Rs.2,50,000 from National Board of Higher Mathematics during 2023-2024.
The Department has three Endowments, two established earlier during 2004 and the third on in 2019 as detailed below:
It is one of the preferred centre by the students belonging to the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu.
50 students have qualified in the NET/ GATE/ SET/ Other State level examinations till date. Many of the alumni of the Department are working in well recognized intuitions like IIT, Universities and reputed Colleges.
The Department of Mathematics has a good collection of books in the thrust areas like Algebra, Discrete Mathematics and Analysis. There are 3063 books in Department Library. From the grants sanctioned by NBHM, UGC and other agencies, the Department of Mathematics has been subscribing for a good number of journals in the thrust areas of the Department. This facility is being used many of the students from affiliated colleges of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University also.
