The Centre for Archaeology was created in this University for concentration on Archaeological research activities in the year 2021 vide Syndicate Resolution 193.A12 dated 16.07.21. As Archaeological studies are gaining interest day by day in Southern Tamilnadu and to meet the demand, qualified man power is required for such studies, it was proposed to upgrade the centre for Archaeology to Department of Archaelogy and to introduce academic programme on M.A. Applied Archaeology from the academic year 2023-2024 vide Syndicate Resolution dated 03.11.2022. Hon’ble Governor -Chancellor approved the proposal of inclusion of Department of Archaeology under the Faculty of Arts in Chapter XI Clause 1(c ) of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Statutes. The course name was changed to M.A. Archaeology vide syndicate Resolution dated 01.06.2023. The course is now running vibrant with the enthusiastic 25 students. In the short period, the department has found and documented several ancient inscriptions in Tirunelveli district.
