The Department of Physical Education & Sports, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University came into existence ever since the inception of the University on September 1990 and it functions under the Headship of Dr. D.Shunmuganathan right from that period. The Department of Physical Education & Sports, MSU, has been able to carve out a name for itself among the high achievers in the field of sports and games, mostly by the impressive support it has enjoyed from several quarters, the most important of them being the University Administration. Periodically the Department comes up with a lot of well meaning suggestions to be considered by the University authorities to foster sports talents, most of which have been well received |

The Department co-ordinates and regulates the Sports activities of the affiliated Colleges spread over in the southern districts of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari numbering 95 as on date. It also organises the annual programmes including the following:
|
|
|
a) Inter-Collegiate Tournament for Men & Women
b) Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet for Men & Women
c) Special Races during the National days like the Independence Day and Republic Day. |
|
|
|
|
Another important activity of the Department is making the affiliated colleges participate in the Inter-University tournaments organised by the Association of Indian Universities. The Department also carries out the following activities: |
|
|
|
|
|
a) Selection trials for University teams in 23 disciplines of Sports and games meant for both men & women.
b) The initial selection is followed up by coaching camps, conditioning camps and sports clinics depending upon the nature of the games by utilizing the services of expert coaches from Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and Sports Authority of India.
c) Sending various contingents to different venues for the Inter University tournaments organised by the Association of Indian Universities by appointing suitable coaches and managers to train and accompany the teams. |

The functions carried out in this connection include the following: |

|
|
|
|
a. Appointment of Coaches/Manager and persual and certification of eligibility of players.
b. Arrangement of Travel for players according to schedule.
c. Preparation and distribution of Uniforms and kits.
d. Camp arrangements and boarding and lodging of players.
e. Official correspondence with the Association of Indian Universities, Colleges and Sports bodies. |

Apart from the routine work connected with college sports the following activities are also conducted towards planning and preparation of Annual Sports Calender. |

2.Obtaining information from AIU and sanction from University.
3.Inter - University Tournaments. |

|
|
|
One of the recent achievements of the Department has been the organisation of Inter University Sports tournament sanctioned to the Universities only by the Association of Indian Universities, upon consideration of the dynamism of the Sports Department of the MSU, inspite of several constraints, this Department has succeeded in organizing the following Inter University tournaments with great success. More than 50 teams had taken part in every event. |
