Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1992 with a mission to offer Post graduate degree and research programs in Mathematics. The Department has been offering a full-time 2 year M. Sc., M. Phil., and Ph. D in Mathematics since its inception.

At present the Department has 4 Professors and 3 Assistant Professors. The faculty members of the department are highly qualified researchers and the department is having a good number of externally funded research projects granted by funding agencies including UGC, DST and DRDO etc.

Advanced Academic Programs offered by the Department have been streamlined to make the students competitive and accountable in accordance with the criteria stipulated for national accreditation. The Department has academic links with premier National and International Institutions. Adequate infrastructure facilities and the peaceful campus atmosphere are conducive to the students to pursue their academic endeavors in an excellent manner.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The Department of Mathematics has been engaged in research in the areas of Algebra, Graph Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Optimization Techniques and Algorithms. 14 full time research scholars are working for Ph.D and they are supported by Basic Science Research Fellowship, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, INSPIRE Fellowship and Major Research Project Fellowship.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The National Board of Higher Mathematics under the aegis of the Department of Atomic Energy has been sanctioning annual library grant to the Department from the year 1999. A sum of Rs. 4.5 lakhs has been sanctioned for the financial year 2014-15. In view of the research work done by the Department during the past years, the University Grants Commission has recognized and sanctioned UGC-SAP (DRS-I) support to the Department for a period of five years (2007–2012). Having completed Phase-I, the Department has been sanctioned UGC-SAP(DRS-II) for a period of five year from 2013 to 2018 and an amount of Rs. 57 lakhs has been allotted. The Department has also received the status of DST-FIST for a period of five years (2013-2018) and an amount of Rs. 45 lakhs has been allotted. In 2012, the Tamil Nadu Government recognized the Department and ordered to upscale the Department with High Tech Laboratories at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crores under various Heads. Consequently, a new building for the Department was declared open by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 12.6.2015.
