The department of Chemistry of this University was the first department to start functioning from July 1980 in the erstwhile P.G Centre of Madurai Kamaraj University at Tirunelveli. Later in 1990 it was inducted into Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Existing only as a teaching department in its earlier days, it became a teaching-cum-research department from 1989. It has a long tradition over nearly 30 years in imparting Chemistry education to the rural backward area of Southern-skirts of Tamil Nadu. |

The department is offering full-time general Chemistry courses in M.Sc & M.Phil programmes with special papers in advanced research topics. It also offers both full-time and part-time Ph.D programme. The seven faculty members of the department, backed with rich research experience, conduct research in thrust areas like bioinorganic, catalysis, organometallies, polymers, sensors, fluorescent probes, spectroscopy etc., and in socially relevant fields like environmental pollution and green chemistry. The department has produced 40 Ph.Ds so far. The faculty members of the dept. have published more than 200 research papers in reputed research journals. They have also presented many research papers in national and international conferences It has secured research projects from DST, CSIR, DRDO and UGC and an Industrial Consultancy project from M/s SPIC Ltd. In recognition of its research contribution, the dept. has been now recognized as ‘DST – FIST sponsored’ and getting funds for improving the infrastructure facilities. Placement of students of this department in industries, Universities/Colleges, Ph.D admission abroad and reputed institutions like IIT etc. are other feathers in its credit. Striving hard in its endeavour, the department plans to diversity and expand its activities in the years to come.
