Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University launched into a new job-oriented, two year M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry (CBCS) programme as a self supporting course from 21st August 2006. To start with it was a single man Department. With the Governor’s assent, the Department started functioning as an independent Department from January 2008 onwards under the leadership of Dr. S. Gopalakrishnan, Former Senior Professor & Head of the Department.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry, an amalgamation of basic chemistry and life sciences, is a multidisciplinary field that deals with the principles and applications of natural, synthetic, computational and analytical chemistry in the discovery of chemical therapeutics for the prevention and cure of life threatening diseases.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry provides instructional and research training to the students in the areas of organic drug synthesis, characterization, drug testing etc.

The M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry (CBCS) course has renamed into M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Sciences (CBCS) course from the academic year, 2014-15 onwards in order to give the opportunity for the basic science graduates with chemistry as an ancillary subject.

During the Academic year 2014-2015, The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry jointly with the Department of Chemistry offer M.Sc. Organic Chemistry (CBCS) course. This M.Sc. Organic Chemistry course being offered in University of Madras for several decades has been declared as equivalent to M.Sc. Chemistry by Tamil Nadu Government (Vide G.O. (Ms) No.72, dated 30.04.2013. Hence there will not be any problem for the students to apply for teaching jobs in all Tamil Nadu Government institutions and at the same time to Pharmaceutical / Chemical companies. Hence, it is hoped that this course will attract more students to apply.

Leading Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industries like Syngene International Private Limited, Bangalore- 560 099; Dr. Reddy’s laboratories limited, Hyderabad – 500090; The Madras Pharmaceuticals, Chennai -600 096; Saimirra Innopharm Private Limited, Chennai – 600 098; Surien Pharmaceuticals Private Limited, Chennai – 602 101; Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited, Chennai- 600119; Caplin Point Laboratories Limited, Chennai – 601 201; Apex Laboratories Private Limited, Alathur, Kancheepuram Dist-603 110; Cassel Research Laboratories Private Limited, Chennai-600 032 and Avn Ayurveda Formulations Private Limited, Madurai– 625 004 have been collaborated with the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

In the fourth Semester of the P.G. programme, each student will carry out a project work in anyone of the aforesaid companies and hence the chance of the students getting jobs after completion of the course is very bright.

Infrastructure & Facilities

The department has well equipped lecture halls, one with Smart Class room facility, for conducting PG and Seminar classes and State-of-the-art laboratories to train PG students with facilities for carrying out synthesis, testing, development & validation of analytical methods, extraction, isolation and identification of phytopharmaceuticals.

One air-conditioned instrumentation room is also available with sophisticated instruments like “SYSTRONICS” Double Beam PC Based UV- VIS Spectrophotometer, “EUTECH” Water Quality Analyser with multiple parameters and “ROBONIK’ Auto Biochemistry Analyser (Prietest Touch model).

Research Focus

The major areas of research being conducted under the pharmaceutical chemistry specialization include isolation and identification of phytoconstituents and study their possible pharmacological activities, development and validation of analytical methods for drugs and drug formulations, novel drug delivery system etc.
